Phenological Observation April 2021 Report: Analysis of Precipitation, Planting and Development in Grains and Legumes!

The report "Phenological Evaluation - Precipitation, Planting and Development Analysis in Grains and Legumes, April 2021" prepared by the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) is available on the link.

Pulses and grain are detailed in the analysis as:

Estimations for April precipitation were below the expected ratio and lower than last year.
Rainfall in Marmara Region was inadequate and Southeastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia Regions had the highest decrease in precipitation.
In the Southeastern Anatolia Region, the insufficient amount of precipitation in March and April caused serious damage in these farmlands by stressing the plant, especially in dry farming lands, causing it to turn yellow or even dry the plants.
Favorable weather conditions and rain in the April period have positively affected the Thrace Region's grain growth. It is considered that the precipitation in the first 15 days of May will significantly affect the yield. If the precipitation continues in this way until harvest, more yield is expected in the region compared to the previous year.
At the beginning of February, wheat has grown early due to the high temperature, and it is predicted that there will be some decrease in the yield as this will cause a decrease in the number of grains in Adana.

It is predicted that the high temperatures that the grains are exposed to during the bust-out (April 19 and 20) in Hatay will adversely affect the grain formation, especially in barren lands.
Since the precipitation in April in the Central Anatolia Region is lower than optimal level and there was no rainfall in the first week of May. The grain growth in the arid areas depends upon the amount of rainfall.

Pesticide applications continue throughout the country for plant diseases, pests, and weeds. Sunn pest detection has started in some places in the Thrace region and will be completed with the surveillance workup in a month. As a result of the findings made at the first stage of the studies in Edirne, the sunflower population was not very dense and almost at last year's levels. Precautions for pest protection have been initiated around Gaziantep. Sunflower damage has been observed especially in the bread wheat around Diyarbakır. It is estimated that the sunflower population, which is high in the studies carried out in autumn-winter quarters in Kırşehir, increased after the climatic conditions.

The precipitation to be received in May throughout the country will be determinant in the harvest, especially in Thrace, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Central Aegean, and Eastern Anatolia. It is estimated that wheat and barley production will be lower than last year.
